The rate and how it is calculated

The PST went from 5% to 6% on March 23, 2017, with the 2017-18 budget, and has not changed since. GST is left out of the calculation: PST is charged on the selling price before GST. A vendor whose prices include GST applies 5.71% to the posted price instead, which comes to the same thing.

Licence and returns

Every business operating or making retail sales in Saskatchewan needs a PST number. The one exception is the small trader: someone who makes goods at home and sells them from home to individuals, for less than $10,000 a year. Selling at a farmers' market, online or to businesses brings the licence requirement back.

Filing frequency depends on the tax remitted in a year: monthly above $12,000, quarterly from $4,800 to $12,000, annual under $4,800. A return filed online in Saskatchewan eTax Services (SETS) is due on the last day of the month after the period. A nil return is still a return.

A taxable purchase from a supplier who did not collect PST, such as an unlicensed out-of-province business, means the buyer self-assesses the PST and pays it directly.

One example, both ways

Adding the taxes: $60.00
Amount before tax$60.00
GST (5%)$3.00
PST (6%)$3.60
Total$66.60
Removing the taxes: $100.00
Amount before tax$90.09
GST (5%)$4.50
PST (6%)$5.41
Total$100.00

To remove the taxes, divide the total by 1.11, then check that the price you get plus its rounded taxes adds back up to the total.

In QuickBooks Online

In QuickBooks Online, pick Saskatchewan under Sales Tax, Overview, for the GST. Then add PST through Manage sales tax, Add tax, Start tracking in a new province, and enter your PST number. Set the PST filing frequency to the one the province assigned you, which need not match your GST one.

No. GST is excluded from the PST calculation: both are charged on the price before tax.

Before the return, in QuickBooks

This calculator settles one invoice at a time. If your books are in QuickBooks Online, Caribooks has an Autopilot loop, Sales tax check, that goes over last month before the return. It flags each sale or purchase with no tax code, with a code unusual for that customer or vendor, or with tax that does not match its code's rate, then totals the tax collected, paid and net for each tax agency. It only reads: nothing in your books changes.
