Rates in force
| Tax | Rate | Since | Collected by |
|---|---|---|---|
| HST (harmonized sales tax) | 15% | July 1, 2016 | Canada Revenue Agency |
The rate
HST has been 15% since July 1, 2016; it was 13% before. The invoice shows the HST as a single 15% rate.
A New Brunswick business that ships to another province charges the tax of the province it delivers to: an order delivered to Toronto carries Ontario's 13% HST, not 15%.
Registering
You register for HST with the CRA at the same threshold as GST: $30,000 of taxable supplies over four consecutive calendar quarters, or within a single quarter.
One example, both ways
| Amount before tax | $120.00 |
|---|---|
| HST (15%) | $18.00 |
| Total | $138.00 |
| Amount before tax | $434.78 |
|---|---|
| HST (15%) | $65.22 |
| Total | $500.00 |
To remove the taxes, divide the total by 1.15, then check that the price you get plus its rounded taxes adds back up to the total.
In QuickBooks Online
In QuickBooks Online, pick New Brunswick under All apps, Sales Tax, Overview. QuickBooks creates the CRA agency with the 15% HST code, and the return is prepared on the Filings tab before you submit it to the CRA.
Quick answers
How do I reverse 15% HST?
Divide the total by 1.15. For $500 including tax: $434.78 before tax and $65.22 of HST.
Since when is New Brunswick HST 15%?
Since July 1, 2016. It was 13% from April 2013 to June 2016.
Before the return, in QuickBooks
This calculator settles one invoice at a time. If your books are in QuickBooks Online, Caribooks has an Autopilot loop, Sales tax check, that goes over last month before the return. It flags each sale or purchase with no tax code, with a code unusual for that customer or vendor, or with tax that does not match its code's rate, then totals the tax collected, paid and net for each tax agency. It only reads: nothing in your books changes.
