Sales tax calculator
GST, HST, PST or QST: pick the province, type an amount, and the calculator adds the taxes or takes them out of a tax-included total. Each tax is rounded to the cent the way a real invoice rounds it, and the breakdown copies in one click. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How the calculation works
To add taxes, each tax is calculated on the price before tax, then rounded to the cent. No provincial tax is charged on the GST, and the GST is not charged on any provincial tax. In Quebec, for instance, $100 gives $5.00 of GST and $9.98 of QST, $114.98 in all.
To remove taxes, divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate: 1.14975 in Quebec, 1.13 in Ontario, 1.05 in Alberta. The calculator then looks for the price before tax that, once its taxes are rounded, gives back exactly the total.
Sometimes no price does. In Ontario, $88.49 comes to $99.99 with tax and $88.50 comes to $100.01: nobody can pay exactly $100.00. The calculator then keeps the taxes of the price just below and adds the leftover cent to the amount before tax, so the figures it shows still add up to the total. It says so under the result.
Quick answers
What is the sales tax rate in Canada?
It depends on the province where the sale happens: 5% in Alberta and the territories (GST only), 11% in Saskatchewan, 12% in British Columbia and Manitoba, 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia, 14.975% in Quebec and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.
How do I calculate sales tax in reverse?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the province's combined rate and round to the cent. Then check that this price plus each rounded tax gives back the total; if not, there is a cent to place. The calculator does that check for you.
Which tax do I charge when I ship to another province?
The tax of the province you deliver to, not the one of your address. A Vancouver store that delivers a mattress to Toronto charges Ontario's 13% HST.
When do I have to start charging GST/HST?
Once your taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, or within a single quarter. Provincial taxes set their own bars: $10,000 for B.C. PST, $30,000 for Manitoba RST and for the QST.
Before the return, in QuickBooks
This calculator settles one invoice at a time. If your books are in QuickBooks Online, Caribooks has an Autopilot loop, Sales tax check, that goes over last month before the return. It flags each sale or purchase with no tax code, with a code unusual for that customer or vendor, or with tax that does not match its code's rate, then totals the tax collected, paid and net for each tax agency. It only reads: nothing in your books changes.
