Alberta GST calculator

Alberta is the only province without a provincial sales tax. A taxable sale there carries only the 5% federal GST, collected by the Canada Revenue Agency.

5%, but not for every sale

GST has been 5% since January 1, 2008. What sets the rate is the place of supply: a Calgary business that ships to Halifax charges Nova Scotia's 14% HST, and one that ships to Winnipeg charges 5% GST, plus Manitoba RST if it has to collect it.

Registering

GST registration becomes mandatory past $30,000 of taxable supplies over four consecutive calendar quarters, or within a single quarter. Below that, registering voluntarily lets you recover the GST you pay on purchases.

One example, both ways

Adding the taxes: $100.00
Amount before tax$100.00
GST (5%)$5.00
Total$105.00
Removing the taxes: $50.00
Amount before tax$47.62
GST (5%)$2.38
Total$50.00

To remove the taxes, divide the total by 1.05, then check that the price you get plus its rounded taxes adds back up to the total.

In QuickBooks Online

In QuickBooks Online, pick Alberta under Sales Tax, Overview: QuickBooks creates the CRA agency and the GST code. If you also sell into a province with its own tax, add it through Manage sales tax, Add tax; Alberta itself never shows up in that list, since its GST is already covered.

Is there PST in Alberta?

Before the return, in QuickBooks

This calculator settles one invoice at a time. If your books are in QuickBooks Online, Caribooks has an Autopilot loop, Sales tax check, that goes over last month before the return. It flags each sale or purchase with no tax code, with a code unusual for that customer or vendor, or with tax that does not match its code's rate, then totals the tax collected, paid and net for each tax agency. It only reads: nothing in your books changes.
