Nova Scotia HST calculator

Nova Scotia is the one province whose tax changed recently: on April 1, 2025 the provincial part of the HST went from 10% to 9%, and the HST from 15% to 14%. A calculator or an accounting file that was never updated still shows 15%.

The rate, before and after

HST was 15% from October 1, 2016 to March 31, 2025. Since April 1, 2025 it is 14%: 5% federal and 9% provincial. A sale made before that date keeps the old rate; for contracts and payments that straddle the change, the CRA published transitional rules in Notices 342 (goods and services) and 343 (real property).

As everywhere HST applies, the invoice shows one 14% rate, not the two parts.

Registering and filing

HST is run by the CRA. A business registers once its taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, or within a single quarter, and files one GST/HST return.

One example, both ways

Adding the taxes: $100.00
Amount before tax$100.00
HST (14%)$14.00
Total$114.00
Removing the taxes: $1,000.00
Amount before tax$877.19
HST (14%)$122.81
Total$1,000.00

To remove the taxes, divide the total by 1.14, then check that the price you get plus its rounded taxes adds back up to the total.

In QuickBooks Online

If you used QuickBooks Online before April 2025, check that new invoices take 14%. Intuit recommends adding a new code or custom rate for a rate change rather than editing the existing code, so sales at 15% and at 14% stay on the same return, each at its own rate. The path: All apps, Sales Tax, Manage sales tax, then Add custom rate under the agency.

Before the return, in QuickBooks

This calculator settles one invoice at a time. If your books are in QuickBooks Online, Caribooks has an Autopilot loop, Sales tax check, that goes over last month before the return. It flags each sale or purchase with no tax code, with a code unusual for that customer or vendor, or with tax that does not match its code's rate, then totals the tax collected, paid and net for each tax agency. It only reads: nothing in your books changes.
