B.C. PST and GST calculator

British Columbia has two sales taxes and two agencies: the 5% GST, collected by the Canada Revenue Agency, and the 7% PST, collected by the provincial Ministry of Finance. That means two registrations and two returns, and 12% on most taxable sales.

Rates checked on September 25, 2026 against the official sources listed below.

PST is not HST

The province tried the HST from 2010 to 2013 and then left it: the PST came back on April 1, 2013, with its own exemptions. It is calculated on the price before GST, and GST is not charged on the PST. On $100 that is $7 of PST, $5 of GST, $112 in total.

The general rate is 7%, but not everywhere: 10% on liquor, 8% on accommodation, 20% on vapour products. The calculator uses the general rate.

What changes on October 1, 2026

Budget 2026 widens the PST base from October 1, 2026, without touching the 7% rate. Newly taxable items include residential landline service, toll-free numbers, basic cable, clothing patterns, the yarn and fabric used to make or mend clothing, and services to clothing and footwear.

The expansion to professional services is on hold. On September 18, 2026, the province paused it for accounting and bookkeeping, architecture, engineering, geoscience, non-residential real estate and security services. If you registered for PST only because of those services, the province asks you to cancel the account in eTaxBC.

Registering and filing

GST follows the federal rules: register with the CRA past $30,000 of taxable supplies. PST has its own, much lower bar. A small seller can skip registering only if eligible retail sales stay at $10,000 or less over the past 12 months and the next 12, and the business does not sell from an established commercial premises. PST returns are filed in eTaxBC.

One example, both ways

Adding the taxes: $80.00
Amount before tax$80.00
GST (5%)$4.00
PST (7%)$5.60
Total$89.60
Removing the taxes: $200.00
Amount before tax$178.57
GST (5%)$8.93
PST (7%)$12.50
Total$200.00

To remove the taxes, divide the total by 1.12, then check that the price you get plus its rounded taxes adds back up to the total.

In QuickBooks Online

In QuickBooks Online, set up GST under Sales Tax, Overview, picking British Columbia. For PST, go to Manage sales tax, Add tax, then Start tracking in a new province: QuickBooks creates the PST agency and its codes and asks for your PST number.

You then prepare two returns in QuickBooks, each on its own schedule: GST to file with the CRA, PST to file in eTaxBC.

Before the return, in QuickBooks

This calculator settles one invoice at a time. If your books are in QuickBooks Online, Caribooks has an Autopilot loop, Sales tax check, that goes over last month before the return. It flags each sale or purchase with no tax code, with a code unusual for that customer or vendor, or with tax that does not match its code's rate, then totals the tax collected, paid and net for each tax agency. It only reads: nothing in your books changes.
