Caribooks or Dext?
Dext photographs a receipt, reads it and sends it to your accounting software. Caribooks connects QuickBooks Online to Claude or ChatGPT and does what comes after: attaching the receipt to its card charge, entering the supplier's bill, checking their statement at month end. Both dig through the same shoebox. Past that, they are different tools.

The short answer
Choose Dext if your team snaps receipts all day, files expense claims, logs mileage or keeps the books in Xero or Sage. Choose Caribooks if the books are in QuickBooks Online and you want an assistant that reads the whole ledger, answers in French or English and handles the follow-up, asking before each change until you tell it otherwise. Plenty of firms could run both: Caribooks works on whatever is in QuickBooks, however it got there.

Dext
Built for: the business or firm whose bottleneck is getting paper into the accounting software.
An iOS and Android app, an email address and web upload for receipts and invoices, weekly fetching from authorised suppliers, and bank feeds. Dext extracts supplier, date, amount and tax, then publishes to more than 30 accounting systems, with supplier rules that fill in the category on repeat bills. AI Assist, a paid add-on, learns from your corrections and suggests automations. For firms, Data Health reviews each client's Xero or QuickBooks file daily and gives it a score. Expense claims with approvals and a GPS mileage tracker are included.
Pricing: in Canada, $39.50 CAD a month ($31.50 CAD billed annually) for 250 documents and 5 users. Past the limit, documents upload but are not read until the next billing date. Line items and supplier statements cost from $28.50 CAD a month each or $0.70 a document, PDF bank statements from $17 CAD a month or $0.42 a document. AI Assist is $15 a month until October 31.
Caribooks
Built for: the QuickBooks Online owner, bookkeeper or firm who would rather ask for the work than do it.
An assistant in Claude or ChatGPT with 220 tools and 35 reports over the whole ledger, read-only until you switch on writing for a company. Each company gets its own email address and a drop link that opens without a login and can sit on a phone's home screen. Autopilot runs loops you write in a sentence: attach receipts to their charges, turn supplier invoices into bills, check supplier statements, flag duplicate invoices, close the month, chase overdue invoices. A loop puts each change on Approvals until you let it act alone. When you refuse a change and say why, the next run reads your reason and can offer it back as a rule. Skills for a management report, a month-end close (the books health check) and a payables run are free on every plan.
Pricing: $39 CAD a month for the Connector on one company (the assistant and the document box), $99 CAD for five. Autopilot is $149 CAD for one company, $299 CAD for five. No document count and no credits; only drop links stop at 300 files a day per account. QuickBooks Online only, no native app, no expense claims or mileage.

When Dext is the better pick
- Your books are in Xero, Sage or FreeAgent. Caribooks only works with QuickBooks Online.
- Your staff file expense claims or log kilometres. Dext does both; we do neither.
- You want receipts captured and published, nothing more. At $39.50 a month Dext does that without Autopilot's $149.
- You need years of PDF bank statements turned into transactions this week.
When Caribooks is
- You want to ask your books things. "Who has owed us money for more than 60 days?" is one sentence in Claude or ChatGPT, answered from the ledger.
- Capture is not the slow part. Matching a receipt to its card charge, ticking off the supplier's statement: a loop does it and waits for your OK.
- You would rather not count documents. The price is per company.
- You keep books for several companies. Each has its own address and drop link, so a gas receipt with no company name on it still lands in the right file.
Quick answers
Is Caribooks a Dext alternative?
For QuickBooks Online, partly. Caribooks takes receipts and invoices by email, drop link or upload, and its loops attach them to expenses or turn them into bills. It has no phone app, no expense claims and no bank statement extraction. It also does work Dext's pages do not describe: answering questions about the ledger, running reports, preparing the month-end close.
Can I use Dext and Caribooks together?
Yes. Dext publishes to QuickBooks, and Caribooks works on what is in QuickBooks. The receipts loop only looks at expenses with no document attached, so the ones Dext already documented are left alone.
Does Caribooks have a mobile app?
No. Add your company's drop link to the home screen and it opens like one: tap, take the photo, it is sent. Forwarding the receipt to the company's email address works too.
