Three different products are sold under the phrase "AI bookkeeping", and they are not variants of one thing. One replaces your general ledger. One is a bookkeeping service with software behind it and people accountable for the result. One leaves QuickBooks exactly where it is and gives an assistant access to it. Choosing the wrong kind costs more than choosing the wrong brand inside a kind, because the kind decides where your books live and who answers for them. What follows sorts the market as of September 2026 into those three groups, with each vendor's own published price, and says who each one is for.
As of September 2026, the tools sold as AI bookkeeping for QuickBooks Online fall into three groups. Replacement ledgers such as Digits and Puzzle ask you to leave QuickBooks and keep the books in their system instead: Digits publishes plans at $65, $100 and $250 a month, Puzzle from $25 to $300 a month billed annually. Bookkeeping services with AI inside, such as Pilot and Zeni, keep a human team responsible for the close: Pilot's Essentials plan is $99 a month, Zeni's Starter plan is $549. Assistants that work inside the QuickBooks file you already have are the cheapest group and change the least: Meridian's connector is free, DeepLedger is $20 a company a month, Caribooks $39, Booke $129 a business, Kipper $200. Decide the group first. It settles where the ledger lives and who is answerable for the numbers, and only then does the brand matter.
Three kinds of product, and what each one asks of you
A replacement ledger. Digits and Puzzle are accounting software in their own right. Digits publishes a page titled "Digits vs. Quickbooks" that compares its Core plan at $100 a month against QuickBooks Online Plus at $115, which is a fair description of the trade: you are switching platforms. Puzzle's own pricing page describes using Puzzle "as the primary general ledger" and offers a QuickBooks migration on its $100 Complete plan. The upside is that the automation runs on a ledger designed around it. The cost is a migration, and an accountant who now has to open software they may not use for any other client.
A service with AI inside. Pilot and Zeni sell an outcome: closed books, produced by a team using their own tooling. Zeni is the interesting case for a QuickBooks user, because its own FAQ states that QuickBooks Online Plus is required and that entries are made into QuickBooks by a blend of its finance experts and its platform. So the file stays yours. The work does not. Pilot lists "keep your existing QuickBooks account and historical data" as a feature of its Custom plan, which implies its cheaper plans do not assume it.
An assistant inside your existing file. This group connects to the QuickBooks Online API and works in the file you already have. Most of them now do it through the Model Context Protocol, which is the standard that lets Claude or ChatGPT call tools on your behalf. Nothing migrates, nothing is rebuilt, and you can stop at any point by revoking the connection in QuickBooks. The honest limit of the whole group is that none of them takes responsibility for the books. They pull, compare and flag; you decide. Two rows deserve a caveat. Kipper's own connector page said its MCP beta was opening and invited visitors to join a list, so the $200 plan we read prices its Slack and Teams product; check where the connector stands before you budget for it. And Intuit's launch announcement for Intuit Assist says it is available to QuickBooks Online customers in the U.S., so a Canadian file may not see it at all.

Can ChatGPT do my bookkeeping?
Not on its own. ChatGPT with a pasted export can read what you pasted, and the export is stale the moment you download it. What changes the answer is a connection to the live file. Intuit publishes a QuickBooks plugin for ChatGPT, found under Plugins in the sidebar. Meridian, DeepLedger and Caribooks all connect ChatGPT to QuickBooks Online too, with the caveat that ChatGPT's custom connector support sits behind a paid plan, in developer mode, on the web only. Claude is the easier client at the moment: connectors work on every plan, including the free one.
Once connected, ChatGPT can do the reading half of bookkeeping well. It can pull a profit and loss, list every invoice past ninety days, or compare a credit card statement against what is recorded. The categorization half is where care starts, because a plausible category and a correct category look identical in a chat window.
How much does AI bookkeeping cost?
Three bands, as of September 2026, and they barely overlap.

Two costs hide outside those bands. The first is your QuickBooks Online subscription, which every product in the first band and Zeni still require underneath. The second is your own review time, which the cheapest option needs the most of and the most expensive needs the least. A $39 connector that saves four hours is a better deal than a $549 service if you were going to review the work anyway, and a much worse one if you were not.
Is there a free AI for accounting?
Yes, three genuinely free routes exist, each with a condition attached.
- Meridian's QuickBooks connector, from Pilot, is fully hosted and, in its own words, 100% free. It reads and writes arbitrary transactions, journal entries included, and connects to several QuickBooks clients without reconfiguration.
- Intuit's own MCP server is open source on GitHub, with 145 tools across 29 entity types and 11 reports. It is free to run and it runs locally, as a process on your machine. The condition is real: you register an app on the Intuit Developer Portal, and production authorization needs a public HTTPS callback, so this is a developer's route, not a bookkeeper's.
- Intuit Assist is built into QuickBooks Online rather than sold separately. It reads a receipt and fills in the expense category, payment account and vendor, drafts reminders for overdue invoices, and turns a forwarded email into a bill.
Free trials cover most of the rest. Caribooks and Kipper both offer 14 days with no credit card, Puzzle offers 14 days, and DeepLedger was free through 21 September 2026 while in beta.
Can AI do my QuickBooks?
Some of it, and the line is sharper than the marketing suggests.
It does reading well. Reports, searches across every entity, comparisons between periods, finding the transaction behind a number. This is where every tool in the third group is strongest, and where the risk is lowest, because a wrong answer is visible when you check it against the file.
It does writing under supervision. Creating invoices, posting journal entries, setting up recurring templates: mechanically fine, and worth being slow about. Caribooks starts every connection read-only and requires the account owner to switch a company to full access before any write tool works, with an explicit confirmation in the conversation for anything that deletes, voids or emails. DeepLedger turns uncertain items into tasks you approve. Kipper refuses to write at all. Those are three defensible answers to the same problem, and the one that suits you depends on whether you would rather correct a mistake or prevent one.
It does not reconcile. Reconciliation in QuickBooks Online is a screen with a checkbox per transaction, and it stays there. An assistant can compare a statement to the ledger and tell you what looks unmatched, which is the tedious part, but the ticking is yours.
It does not exercise judgment. Materiality, cut-off, what to accrue, whether revenue belongs in this period: those are the job itself. A tool can shorten the walk to them and cannot take the decision. Where this is the wrong tool
You want the books done for you. This is the honest disqualifier for Caribooks and for every connector in the third group. We give an assistant access to your ledger; we do not close your books, and there is nobody to call when a number is wrong. If that is what you are shopping for, Pilot or Zeni are the right shape of product, and a local bookkeeper is often the better one.
You are on QuickBooks Desktop. There is no API to connect to, so the whole third group is unavailable to you regardless of price.
Your books are a mess. Faster access to miscoded transactions is not progress. An assistant will answer confidently from bad data and will not tell you the data is bad. Clean up first, or hire someone to.
You need read-only enforced by architecture. If your requirement is that nothing can ever write to a client file, a product that never implements writes is a stronger guarantee than a product that gates them. Kipper is built that way on purpose.
If nothing is connected yet, the cheapest way to find out which group you belong to is to try the third one, since it changes nothing and you can revoke it in a minute.
